Michael Kilpatrick's Jazz Orchestra
The Harmony in Harlem jazz orchestra is a Cambridge-based ensemble dedicated to the music of Duke Ellington, perhaps the greatest composer in the history of jazz. The orchestra evokes the sounds of the swing era from the unique perspective of the Duke Ellington orchestra and its highly individual style. The conductor Michael Kilpatrick, a scholar of Ellington's music, has assembled a repertoire of authentic Ellington compositions research from the original manuscripts. This repertoire encompasses the full breadth of Ellington's talent and that of his co-composer Billy Strayhorn, exploiting both popular and lesser-known gems from throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Harmony In Harlem rehearses regularly and has a strong and dedicated personnel from all corners of Eastern England playing to a highly professional standard.
The Harmony In Harlem orchestra is available to perform at any venue that can accommodate it, indoors or outside. The orchestra comprises at most five saxophones, four trumpets, three trombones, piano, double bass, drum kit, acoustic guitar and a vocalist. We prefer to use a real piano if one is available and to play acoustically if the conditions will allow it.
